DBC to Participate at Duke Earth Day Celebration

The Durham Bicycle Co-operative's Outreach Team will represent the co-op at this year's Earth Day celebration at Duke University.

"If anyone wants to come and do this with me that would be awesome," said Greg Heaton, the DBC's Outreach and Events Coordinator.

Duke's Earth Day celebration will take place at the university on Friday, April 17th from noon until 5 PM. Kelly Meehan from the Duke's School of the environment says the school expects as many as 700 attendees at the family-friendly event.

"Claimed" Earn-a-Bikes to Be Culled

Many of the Earn-a-Bikes (EAB's) that have been in the shop for a while are expected to be returned to "Available" status soon.

"We are going to pull bikes that are over 30 days [old] because we are running out of room," said Thursday shop coordinator, Matthew Yearout.

The Durham Bicycle Cooperative's policy is to retain "claimed" EAB's for up to 30 days past the last date of work recorded on the mechanic's worksheet attached to the bike. Progress should be logged on the worksheet each time work is performed on the bike, and certainly at least once within a 30 day period.

Also important is to record the claimant's phone number on the worksheet. Before returning an EAB to "available" status, Durham Bike Co-op core volunteers will attempt to call the claimant to see if they can return to the shop in a timely manner.

What kind of EAB have you worked on before?

DBC Joins Amazon Smile Program

Community Encouraged to Practice Philanthropy While Shopping Online

The Durham Bicycle Cooperative is encouraging the designation of the DBC as shoppers' chosen nonprofit to receive contributions from Amazon's charitable program.

"This is a super easy way that our members and supporters can help," said DBC founding member Alison Carpenter.

As part of the program, every time a participant makes an eligible purchase from the online retailer, Amazon will make a donation to the designated charitable organization equal to one half percent (0.5%) of the purchase. Although this may not sound like much, thedailybeast.com estimated that it could add up to over $400 million annually.

To take part in the program, participants may go to smile.amazon.com and begin shopping. First time users of amazon.com will need to create an account. Returning amazon.com users can use their regular Amazon login credentials.

Tour de Fat Returns to Durham in Summer

From New Belgium Brewing:

New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat to Travel to Ten Cities in 2015 for its 16th Season
of Beer, Bikes, and Bemusement
The daylong traveling festival honors mankind’s greatest invention – the bike –
while encouraging people to let their alter egos shine
Durham 2Ft. Collins, Colo., March 5, 2015 –With many parts of the country buried in snow, it’s a good time to start thinking about the joys of summertime, including another season of New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat. The 2015 tour will travel to ten cities this year offering the best way to raise money for local non-profits, celebrate two wheels, dress up as your alter ego and be entertained. It all kicks off on May 30 in Washington, D.C. and wraps up in Tempe, AZ on October 3. This year marks the 16th season for Tour de Fat, which has raised close to $4 million for local non-profits since it all began and raised more than $600,000 last year alone. The daylong festivities are free, but all proceeds from beer and merchandise sales, along with parade donations, go to local non-profits.

Each stop kicks off with a costumed bicycle parade that winds through city streets, ending in a city park for a day of entertainment. That’s when eclectic acts take over: from musical performances to yo-yo entertainers, vaudeville acts to a 1000 person Dance Contest to win a New Belgium Cruiser Bike. New features this year include a new Le Tigre Grande variety tent and Sputnik mobile stage. The day of carnival creativity concludes with a celebration of inspirational car-for-bike swappers; brave souls who hand over their car keys as a commitment to commute by bike for the next year.

“Our love for bikes runs deep at New Belgium, it’s how the company started. So every year we like to spread that love around the country by coming into towns from coast to coast and hosting the best way to spend a Saturday,” said Matt Kowal, Tour de Fat Impresario. “Each city has its own flair and uniqueness, which is what makes it all pretty awesome. And to be able to raise millions of dollars along the way, thanks to everyone who celebrates with us, it’s why we do this. We’re all anxious to get this party started once again!”

Tour de Fat will cycle through each of the following cities in 2015:
Washington, D.C.                    May 30                                    Yards Park

Durham - car-for-bike swapIn 2014, Tour de Fat traveled to 10 cities nationwide and attracted 103,500 festival attendees. The philanthropic events raised a total of $625,716 for local nonprofits. New Belgium’s hometown of Fort Collins, Colo. raised the most money (more than $110,000) and attracted the most parade riders and festivalgoers, totaling 25,000 people.
During each tour stop, New Belgium tries to leave as little of an environmental imprint as possible. Tour de Fat hosts green vendors, has compost and recycle stations and festival trucks that operate on biofuel sourced from recycled waste oils.
