Giving Tuesday 2022: Donate to Support Durham Bike Co-op

The Durham Bicycle Cooperative is an all volunteer non-profit 501(c)(3) community bicycle project. We believe bicycles have the power to make our local communities a better place through sound environmental practices, a commitment to sustainable economics and social equality, involvement and outreach with our local community, and promoting cycling as a healthy fitness and wellness activity.

We do:

  • Bicycle repair and redistribution
  • Hands-on mechanical skills training
  • Recycling and reuse of bicycles and bike parts
  • Community outreach in partnership with numerous Durham nonprofit and government agencies
  • Virtual and local events to celebrate bicycling and cultivate a more inclusive bicycling community
  • And more

Your donation helps us continue this work and spread the joy and empowerment of bicycling to more people in Durham.

💸Please consider becoming a monthly recurring donor to provide ongoing support for our work.💸

Here's what we've been up to in the first 9 months of 2022:

2023-2024 Durham Bike Co-op Board Recruitment

It's that time of year again for the bike co-op! We are having our annual board election and are looking for candidates to help fill spots on the Durham Bike Co-op board. The co-op is accepting applications for board membership through Nov 13.

The co-op specifically needs people to help fill the roles of Secretary for the board and Development Lead but all are welcome to bring their talents to the board. The Secretary's duties include sending out the board meeting invites, taking notes during the board meetings and keeping the meeting on track. The Development Lead would help the Co-op find grants to continue the strong growth the Co-op has built over the past few years.

If you're interested in applying to join the board, please complete the attached Google Form before November 13:

Volunteer with the bike co-op!

Have you been looking for an opportunity to get more involved with Durham Bike Co-op?

We always have a need for experienced bicycle mechanics, but even if you don't have mechanical skills, there are lots of other ways to get involved and help us in our mission to increase community access to bicycles in Durham. Below are descriptions of some of the high-priority volunteer roles we have open.

Current volunteer needs at DBC

Experienced mechanics (Sunday shop)

Can you true a wheel and rebuild hubs? We need experienced bike mechanics who can help patrons learn how to repair their bikes on Sundays. You would be working with the lead mechanic and other volunteers to help folks who need bike repair assistance.

Greeters (Thursday Community DIY shop)

Greeters at Durham Bike Co-op work the front desk, checking in patrons and managing sales and payments. You don't need any experience for this role. We'll train you!

Lead and support mechanics (Wednesday TWIG DIY shop)

Lead mechanics open the shop for designated shop hours and help patrons with DIY projects. Support mechanics will help patrons with DIY bike projects. All TWIG mechanics need to be part of the TWIG (trans, women, intersex, and gender nonconforming) community.

Grounds maintenance lead (Year-round)

We're looking for a grounds maintenance lead who will mow the lawn, do weed eating, leaf blowing, and other activities that help keep our property healthy and beautiful. This person will take care of the grounds now, coordinate other volunteers to help, and be responsible for hiring a crew to do the mowing next summer.

Tire disposal lead (Occasional)

Do you have a truck that could occasionally be used to help DBC recycle old tires? We need a volunteer who will periodically empty the dead tire bins at the co-op into their truck, carry to the Waste Management Facility, pay for dumping and get reimbursed.

Have another skill you want to volunteer?

Are you a graphic designer? Do you have photography or fundraising skills to share? Do you like coordinating events? Do you have technology skills that could help a small nonprofit operate? There are lots of other ways to get involved in serving the bike co-op's mission. Contact us if you want to help in some way that's not listed here.

Interested in one of these volunteer roles?
